The Nash Zimmer Transportation Center held its grand opening Monday, April 14th at 10 am. Officials in attendance included U.S. Congressman Joe Courtney, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, State Senator Donald Williams, Jr., State Representatives Gregory Haddad and Linda Orange, Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, UConn Director of Logistics Administration Bill Wendt and UConn Transportation Services Manager Janet Freniere.
The anxiously awaited center will be the hub for UConn shuttle buses, WRTD and Peter Pan bus lines. The UConn Purple and Silver lines have been active at the center since March and the WRTD bus, free to anyone with a student ID, is also utilizing the center. The center offers bus GPS to allow people waiting for a bus to know exactly when it will be arriving. This information will be displayed inside and outside the center and is available via a free smart phone app. Visitors will find public bathrooms, bus waiting areas, and informational kiosks. Anyone who has waited under an underpass in Hartford for a Bolt or Mega Bus will appreciate this service!
The following is planned for bike commuters according to the Mansfield Downtown Partnership FAQs about Nash Zimmer: The Nash Zimmer Transportation Center will provide showers, lockers, and bike storage for bicycle commuters. The outside of the center will include bike racks for short-term commuters. Inside, the center will include bike facilities for those who may be commuting for work or for longer endeavors. Public and secure (swipe card) bike storage will be provided in a protected area between the adjacent parking garage and the transportation center. There will also be places for cyclists to pump up their tires, attempt minor repairs, or leave their bike for larger repairs (through an arrangement with a local bike shop).
In other Storrs Center news, the UConn Health Urgent Care Center is now open. The hours are 10 am to 6 pm daily. Longer hours are expected in the fall. The Urgent Care Center follows the opening of the UConn Health Center at Storrs Center in December 2013 and more services are expected in the future including OB/GYN, dermatology, dental services and psychiatry. Occupying more than 20,000 square feet of Storrs Center, the Health Center is an integral part Storrs Center and demonstrates the stake that UConn has in the future success of Storrs Center.
